Founded at a ford on the river Great Ouse, Bedford is an historic market town in the county of Bedfordshire and has a population exceeding 100,000. The town’s name is believed to be derived from the name of a Saxon chief named Beda and the ford where the town was built. The Anglo-Saxon King Offa of Mercia was buried in the town in 786 although his tomb was later lost to the river. In 886 Bedford became a boundary town and marked the separation of Danelaw and Wessex. The first known fortress in the town was built in 919 by Edward the Elder, although this was destroyed by the Danes. When William II gave the Barony of Bedford to Paine De Beuchamp he built a new castle although this was razed in 1224 and only a mound remains today. From the early Middle Ages Bedford was the market town for the region, and from the 16th century until the early 20th century the town became one of the main centres of the lace industry. By the 19th century the town became an important engineering hub, with gas lighting introduced in 1832, the railway established in 1846 and the first drains and sewer constructed in 1864. 

Located not far from our florists is one of a number of local nature reserves in the area, Hill Rise. It is a 0.9 hectare reserve that despite being surrounded on three sides by houses is an oasis for wildlife and home to a variety of habitats and some beautiful flowers. Formerly the site of the Bedfordshire Training Home for Girls, which was founded in 1882 to prepare poor girls for domestic service, it had become a derelict dumping ground by the 1970s. A group of concerned community members began a campaign to turn the space into an LNR after a ‘Clear up your neighbourhood’ campaign in 1989 as part of national Environment Week, and after some extensive lobbying the green light to create the reserve was given. Hill Rise was obtained a Green Flag Award in 2010, and is now home to muntjac deer, foxes, butterflies who attracted by the vibrant flowers and also dragonflies that have a prefect habitat in the two ponds at the site.

Park Wood is another local nature reserve in the town and covers 5.2 hectares of diverse habitats including woodland, grasslands and ponds. An orchard with traditional fruit trees has been planted at the site and the flowers, including bee and pyramidal orchids, are certain to provide inspiration for any florists, be they amateur or professional.

The largest local nature reserve in the town is Fenlake Meadows which covers 19.2 hectares and is set in a river valley of the Great Ouse. The site has become over run with shrubs and is often water logged but a campaign has been started to make the most of this important wildlife retreat.
